Controversial rapper Eminem received two nominations for the 49th annual Grammy awards, but he can only walk away with one win. He was nominated twice for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration, a category that was introduced in 2002. One nod is for his guest appearance on “Smack That,” a chart-topping hit by R&B crooner Akon. The other is “Shake That,” featuring melodic rapper Nate Dogg, one of three new offerings from Eminem’s greatest hits collection, Curtain Call.

Both songs have enjoyed success on both the radio and the internet. With the growing popularity of digital music files, “Smack That” and “Shake That” are two of the most popular Eminem Downloads.

Eminem broke onto the mainstream music scene in 1999 with multi-platinum selling album, The Slim Shady LP. The following year, he took home two Grammy Awards, including Best Rap Album. That same year Eminem showcased his acting chops by starring in an autobiographical film, 8 Mile. The soundtrack featured four original songs by the syllabic rapper, one of which, “Lose Yourself,” won an Oscar, two Grammy Awards, and one MTV Video Music Award as well as being nominated for a Golden Globe.

Since then, Eminem has slowed down, releasing just three albums in as many years, one being a compilation album and another being a collection of greatest hits. Still, sales of Eminem songs and cds remain strong and the Detroit artist continues influencing mainstream music through producing gigs with both new and established artists.
